Because of this, it has gained popularity and more and more families are opting to store their solar energy. Storing excess solar energy is now possible for personal and business use. While there’s a number of solar batteries available in the market these days, LG and Tesla are the biggest names.

When comparing the Tesla Powerwall and LG Chem batteries, it all comes down to your needs. For most people, neither will be an option until they are both cheaper and more cost effective. They are still years from being a common amenity. But if you are set on getting one for your home and the benefits that you are aiming to gain outweigh the costs, then it is a very good choice to take advantage of this technology.

The Tesla Powerwall

The Tesla Powerwall, in comparison to the LG Chem, is an energy storage industry leader for a few reasons. Firstly, the Powerwall is the lead battery that brought energy storage into the mainstream for many modern homeowners. Tesla, well known all over the world for its electric cars, has been dealing with solar batteries since well before 2015. Their Powerwall is a lithium ion battery with a similar chemistry to the batteries used in their cars. It is designed for easy integration into most solar panel systems, but can also be used solely for home backup power in cases of blackouts and emergencies.

The Tesla Powerwall offers some of the best ratios when it comes to cost per capacity of any product available in the world. To solve grid outage problems and support South Australia’s mission of becoming a renewables-based, biggest virtual power plant in the world, Tesla and the South Australian Government is developing around 50,000 home each with a solar PV system run by Tesla Powerwall.

You may have known that Tesla has gained a strong reputation for its electric cars – and their solar product line has sparked a lot of interest for its promising future and top-notch performance. Tesla is proud of its home battery line as well as their new solar shingles. Their home battery line is deemed as one of the best performing in the market and their solar shingles are slowly but surely proving that they are indeed promising. Tesla still proves that they are an innovator.

The LG Chem

LG, being one of the most reputed multinational electronic company, has also cemented its reputation in the field of solar batteries with the LG Chem. LG Chem offers an impressively good energy saving battery storage system. Because of this product, residents do not need to rely on grids as their electric needs will be fulfilled with the help of these batteries. When unforeseen circumstances such as a blackouts or power failures happens, they can depend on these solar batteries.

Let us do some base comparison

·      Capacity

The Tesla Powerwall has a higher capacity, both batteries are lithium-ion, the Tesla weighs more at 125kg versus LG’s 31-99.8 kg but that should not matter to the majority of consumers. The LG does have a lower running operating temperature at -10C to 45C versus -20C to 50C. Both are floor-standing or can be wall-mounted. Tesla does have an uninterruptible power supply with a backup gateway. The Powerwall can monitor the weather for an approaching storms which is very useful especially if you’re in an area that is frequently stricken by weather-related issues. It charges itself in the event of a possible blackout which is a convenient feature.

·      Peak Power

The Tesla Powerwall has a peak power of 3.3 kW. The LG Chem provides a peak power of 5 kW.

·      Warranty and Pricing

Both are covered by comparable warranties. Tesla will still achieve at least 80% of its energy capacity after being installed for over 10 years while LG may reach around 60%. The Tesla does cost more in comparison to the LG. The LG comes in a number of different varieties making their prices a lot more accessible for the budget conscious customers.

·      Round Trip Efficiency

The LG Chem boasts a round trip efficiency of around 95%. The Tesla Powerwall on the other hand has a round trip efficiency of roughly 90%.

·      Installation

For new systems, the Tesla Powerwall may require an additional inverter for supplemental backup parts and solar connection. The LG Chem is easy to install and complements the cheaper hybrid inverters.

So, which is better?

If you are trying to choose between the Tesla Powerwall and the LG Chem, the LG Chem may be the answer.

The variety and availability of the Tesla Powerwall is appealing to the average consumer. The LG Chem is part of the leading brand in the world when it comes to the lithium-ion battery market. Being currently ranked No.1 in many of the world’s markets for its different product lines, the LG Chem is backed with a strong system. It has also proven its strength when it partnered with the Volvo Car Group thru a massive multi-billion-dollar deal for Volvo’s planned fleet of electric vehicles.

LG has tried to compete with Tesla’s media coverage. Their new high voltage batteries easily compete when it comes to technical specifications and aesthetics. The batteries have overtaken Tesla sales in certain parts of the world’s on-grid storage market. Estimations show that the LG Chem was responsible for almost half of all their storage installations. The batteries look set to have a huge impact on the European market too. The affordability of the LG Chem is also another advantage, allowing most homemakers and start-up businesses to afford this ground-breaking innovation. The compact size that exudes with power is also another thing that made the sales of the LG Chem skyrocket.
