From 1 July 2025, Australian households and small businesses will be able to access significant new rebates on solar battery installations through the federal government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program. This program aims to make home battery systems more affordable, helping more Australians store their solar energy, reduce electricity bills, and support a cleaner, more reliable energy grid.
The program will offer an upfront discount of around 30% on the cost of installing eligible small-scale battery systems. The discount is based on the battery’s usable capacity and will gradually decrease until 2030.
The rebate is delivered via Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), which the government will purchase directly ensuring no additional costs are passed on to households or energy retailers.
The program will be administered under the existing Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), with new regulations to be finalized before the July 2025 start.
Batteries must be installed and certified as capable of storing or discharging energy on or after 1 July 2025 to be eligible.
Safety is a priority all systems must be installed by accredited professionals and meet strict compliance standards. Inspections will be conducted to ensure quality and safety.
Most customers will assign their right to create STCs to a registered agent (such as your solar retailer or installer) in exchange for an upfront discount on the battery’s purchase price.
The value of the discount depends on the number of STCs the battery system is eligible for, minus any administration fees.
